Who Can Be Your Witness

When you sign your deed poll, you’ll need someone to act as your witness. This person’s job is to confirm that they saw you sign the document, so they must be independent.

Your witness must:

Be 18 years old or over;
Be of sound mind and understand what they’re signing; and
Watch you sign the deed poll in person.

Your witness cannot:

Be a relative (for example, a parent, sibling, spouse, or partner); or
Live at the same address as you.

If your witness is related to you or lives with you, your deed poll might not be accepted by government departments, banks, or other organisations, as it could raise doubts about the independence of the witness.

A good choice of witness is someone like a friend, neighbour, or work colleague who meets the rules above.
